Peripheral IV Connectors

To facilitate the delivery of fluids during labour, obstetric anaesthetists from Coventry designed a triple connector, now rightly known as the Coventry Valve, that can be used for all theatre settings and is especially useful in obstetrics, ICU, HDU and orthopaedics.

Routine induced labour requires the delivery of Syntocinon.  The safest way to administer this is to use a syringe-pump connected to a peripheral access secured by an anti-siphon valve.  This will prevent free-flow, eliminating the possibility of foetal distress.

The compact design of these products aids patient comfort, makes them easy to affix and unlikely to dislodge.

RED End caps at all connections comply with the UK Department of Health guidelines issued following Project Orcadian which reported on incidents with clear end caps and patient breathing circuits.

  • 2 Anti-Siphon valves to prevent back flow and free flow
  • 1 Anti-Reflux valve to prevent back flow
  • Needle-free access port
  • Wide bore gravity line to allow high flow of IV fluid
  • J-loop to prevent kinking/occlusion of the tubing
  • Removable bridge to give more flexibility when moving/tranfering the patient

TIVA – TCI Multiple Infusion Sets

Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) along with Target Controlled Infusion (TCI) has seen a significant growth in popularity since its introduction in the mid 1990’s. Thanks to extensive developments in IV drug delivery, clinicians now have access to a variety of advanced syring pumps allowing them to perform TIVA in a safe and controlled manner.

With the introduction of advanced syringe pumps needing multiple IV access, clinicians and TIVA enthusiasts asked Mediplus to develop a safer and dedicated multiple infusion set. The first Mediplus “Dual TIVA Set” was launched at the end of the 1990’s and was an immediate success.  All Mediplus IV products include features necessary for safe, convenient and cost effective TIVA delivery.

RED end caps are fitted at all connections complying with the UK Department of Health guidelines issued following Project Orcadian which reported on incidents with clear end caps and patient breathing circuits.

To ensure the highest levels of safety during TIVA, the Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group (SALG) in their document “Guaranteeing Drug Delivery in Total Anaesthesia recommends:

  • When administering TIVA a non-return valve is always used on any intravenous fluid line

All Mediplus IV sets and connectors include non-return valves:
Anti-reflux valve for the IV fluid line and anti-siphon valves for the syringe pumps

  • Sites of intravenous infusions should be visible so they may be monitored for disconnection, leaks or infusions into subcutaneous tissues

Mediplus products have soft distal end and/or J-loop configuration to reduce stress on the cannula site and therefore minimise risk of disconnection or cannula dislodgement

  • When using equipment, it is essential that clinical staff know its uses and limitations

Mediplus, in collaboration with clinicians and TCI pump manufacturers, regularly organises TIVA study days to provide training in TIVA/TCI

  • Organisations give preference to clearly labelled intravenous connectors and valves

All Mediplus products are clearly labelled for intended use.  Our most popular product, the 3-way TIVA Set, is designed to allow a double infusion of drugs for TIVA as well as the administration of a third fluid under gravity.

3-way TIVA – TCI Multiple Infusion Sets

Mediplus 3-way TIVA-TCI sets have been designed to suit the latest developments in Total Intravenous Anaesthesia. The 3-way TIVA-TCI sets have 2 lumens for routine administration of propofol/remifentanil or other agents as well as a distal limb for delivery of IV fluids by gravity.

2-way Dual TIVA – TCI Sets

The Mediplus Dual TIVA-TCI sets were developed to accommodate a different anaesthetic practice in some hospitals. The patients are usually given IV fluids at the same time as the intravenous anaesthesia. However, some anaesthetists prefer to hydrate the patient beforehand or by using a different cannula site.

Thanks to their dual lumen, the Mediplus Dual TIVA-TCI sets offer a simple solution for the delivery of intravenous agents such as propofol/remifentanil.

The Mediplus 2-way IV set is used widely for single drug sedation or delivery of opioid analgesic agents.

4-way TriplePlus Sets

To meet the demand for multiple infusions into one cannula, especially in ITU, HDU and Critical Care, Mediplus has released a 4-way set. This allows up to  three modular syringe-pumps and a gravity feed to be connected to one cannula. This solution is very neat and comes at a very competitive price versus standard extension lines with valves.

TIVA Combination Sets

Mediplus has worked closely with anaesthetists to create another innovation for the safe delivery of anaesthesia.

When patients move from theatres into recovery, the current practice requires the IV connector to be discarded in favour of a needle-freeconnector. The new TIVA Combination Set features a detachable Siamese infusion line combined with a needle-free IV connector. This means only the TIVA set is discarded leaving the IV connector in place.

Reducing cost and risk, saving time and promoting better infection control.

The Mediplus TIVA Combination Set complies with the recommendations from SALG (Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group) emphasising the following:

  • Anti-reflux and anti-siphon valves to reduce instances of backflow/free-flow
  • Clearly labelled product
  • Instruction for use and full tecnical support from Mediplus
  • Soft distal end / anti-kink bridge to reduce risk of cannula dislodgement and kinking

The TIVA Combination Set includes a long 2.5m 2- or 3-way multiple infusion set (providing adequate length to ease patient transfer)and IV connector with needle-free port – all in one sterile peel pouch. The Siamese configuration of the infusion line prevents lineentanglement and the U-shape connector fits neatly to the back of the patient’s hand; its anti-kink bridge reduces risk of cannuladislodgement and kinking. Once the patient is transferred to Recovery/ICU/ Ward, the IV connector with its needle-free, wipe-clean portstays in place and only the infusion line is discarded.

So, the TIVA Combination Set saves storage space and cost (all items in one pack), saves time (no additional components required),promotes better infection control (only one IV connector required), and reduces risk (Siamese tubing and anti-kink bridge).

Since the first infra-red CO2 measuring and recording apparatus was introduced in 1943 by Luft, Capnography has evolved into an essential component of standard anaesthesia monitoring armamentarium.

The primary goal of Anaesthetists is to prevent hypoxia, and Capnography helps to identify situations that can lead to hypoxia if uncorrected.

The Capnomask

is an oxygen mask that allows the measurement of side-stream end-tidal CO2 via its unique double connector located below the nose of the patient.

This configuration gives an excellent carbon wave form in Capnography, a technique widely accepted as a standard of monitoring.

  • High quality mask protected against deformation caused by the patient’s body heat
  • Aluminium nose clip and adjustable elastic strap to hold the mask firmly in place
  • Unique front dual connector with a sampling line and oxygen line attached so the sampling line does not need to be “inserted” through or below the mask
  • Impregnated with Vanilla fragrance for increased patient comfort
  • Ophthalmic version (A202CMx) also ideal for smaller faces

Moreover, it also helps in the swift differential diagnosis of hypoxia before hypoxia can lead to irreversible brain damage.

Because of these advantages the utility of Capnography has been extended outside the operating theatre, more recently to emergency rooms, endoscopy suites, X-ray rooms and even on-site at emergency and trauma fields.

The Duo Flow nasal cannula

allows simultaneous delivery of oxygen/sampling of CO2to/from both nostrils, thanks to its unique prong design.

Other features include:

  • Kink resistant oxygen tubing with inner star lumen design
  • Flexible contoured cannula for patient’s comfort
  • 0.22u micro filter to protect CO2 monitor
